Growth areas vs Goals: what's the difference?

TeamMaven has both Goals and growth areas, and they answer different questions.

Goals are about your work. They are the results you have committed to deliver for the business, and they are usually time-boxed and reviewed. "Ship the new onboarding flow by the end of Q3" is a Goal.

Growth areas are about you. They are the skills and capabilities you are building for your career, and they live on your Growth Plan. "Get confident presenting to senior stakeholders" is a growth area.

A quick way to tell them apart: if it would still matter to you after changing jobs, it is probably a growth area. If it belongs to the business, it is a Goal.

A few practical points:

  • They live in different places. Goals are in the Goals section, growth areas in Growth > My Growth Plan.
  • They are not connected, and growth areas do not feed into performance reviews.
  • The same theme can show up in both, worded differently. The Goal is the deliverable, and the growth area is the capability behind it. For example, "Lead the security audit" can be a Goal, while "Develop my project leadership skills" is the growth area it stretches.
  • If you are ever unsure where something belongs, ask yourself who it is for. Results for the business go in Goals. Development for you goes in your Growth Plan.
